National unity now very urgent for ‘restoration’ of democracy, says Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday called for national unity for the ‘restoration’ of democracy in the country.

"National unity is now most needed to resist the fascism and autocracy of the current regime and to restore democracy and protect the independence and sovereignty of the country,” he said.

Speaking at an iftar party, the BNP leader said the pro-democracy forces have a responsibility to forge a national unity also to 'restore' the rights of the people, reports UNB.

"Let us all unite and form a government and parliament of people through a credible election under a neutral administration,” he said.

A faction of Gonoforum, led by Mostafa Mohsin Montu, arranged the programme at a restaurant in the city’s Bangla Motor.

Top leaders of different opposition parties took part in the programme.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rob said people are waiting for a clear signal from the political parties to take to the streets to get back their lost rights. “In fact, if we take to the streets, people will also do the same.”

He said a fair and credible election is not possible with the Awami League government in power. “The desired solution can’t be found by considering a national problem from the party point of view. We need a national government to solve national problems nationally.”
