Hanif rules out release of Khaleda on parole

Ruling out the possibility of releasing BNP chief Khaleda Zia's on parole, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif on Sunday said she does not fall under any category to be allowed for release on parole.

He, however, said the government will consider if Khaleda Zia applies for release on parole.

Hanif made the remarks while talking to reporters at AL president's Dhanmondi political office.

"Those who respect law will've to go through the legal process. Parole is a legal matter, not a political one," he added.

Hanif further said the people of the country have no involvement in the current movement of BNP.

On Saturday, Home Minister Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the government will consider releasing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on parole if she files an application and cites specific reasons.

"We haven't received any request for parole so far," he told reporters after inaugurating a naval police station at Chikajani in Dewanganj upazila.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will discuss the matter at their party forum. "A decision on applying for parole will be taken later," he said.

Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8 last year when she was convicted of corruption. She was later found guilty in another corruption case later.

Her release remains the BNP's main demand. The party has been accusing the government of neglecting her treatment and demanding that she be moved to a specialised hospital.

Khaleda was shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on April 1, reports UNB.
