BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said an election is not acceptable without a level-playing field.
Fakhrul came up with the statement while addressing a rally in Rajshahi organised by the Jatiya Oikyafront on Friday, reports bdnews24.com.
“Our words are very clear: a level-playing field must be created and equal rights must be given to all political parties. Begum Khaleda Zia must be released. Otherwise, no election will be acceptable,” Fakhrul said.
The BNP leader has urged the ruling party to accept the demands, including the resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament and formation of a polls-time neutral government to ensure free and fair elections.
The rally was organised on Friday, a day after the Election Commission set December 23 as the voting date.
Coming down heavily on the Election Commission for declaring the election schedule before the consensus among the main political parties, he said, “The election schedule was announced in haste, which went against democracy.”
Dr Kamal Hossain, chief of the alliance, did not join the planned rally due to his high fever.
The event headed by Mizanur Rahman Minu, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, started at 2pm.
BNP leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed and Mirza Abbas, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddique and Oikya Front leader Mahmudur Rahman Manna attended the programme
