Dreadful situation prevails in Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barishal: BNP

BNP on Sunday alleged that a dreadful situation has been created in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal cities ahead of July 30 polls due to the 'wholesale' arrest of the polling agents of its mayoral candidates.

"Detectives are indiscriminately arresting our candidates' agents and showing them arrested in false cases in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal with a motive to terrify voters," said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

He came up with the allegation while speaking at press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.

The BNP leader also accused the law enforcers of harassing and intimidating voters by raiding the houses of BNP leaders and activists in the three cities.

He also alleged that the ruling party men are obstructing BNP candidates and their supporters from carrying out electioneering.

Rizvi said the Election Commission (EC) is not taking any action though various complaints were lodged with them against the violation of the election code of conduct by the ruling party leaders and activists.

The BNP leader alleged that the EC is completely 'inactive and silent' as it is working as a puppet of the government. It seems the Commission is in deep sleep by taking sedatives," he observed.

He said some lawyers and relatives met their party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday in Old Dhaka Central Jail, and found her seriously ill.

"She's too sick to meet the visitors coming down on the ground floor. Her lawyers and relatives met her on the first floor," Rizvi said.

The BNP leader also said Khaleda Zia is now at a serious health risk and her condition is deteriorating gradually as she has been going through immense sufferings in an unhealthy jail condition.

He renewed their party's demand for ensuring better treatment of Khaleda at United Hospital in the capital.

Rizvi said Awami League accorded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a reception at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday inflicting serious sufferings on the city dwellers.

He said the reception only triggered hatred in public mind as the entire Dhaka city turned into a place of sufferings due to the programme, reports UNB.
