Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), a civil society platform, has termed the Gazipur city corporation (GCC) election as ‘controlled’ one.

The platform said the Election Commission played an unresponsive role during the polls despite allegations of irregularities.

The think-tank also said the GCC polls followed the model of Khulna city corporation election which witnessed incidents like capture of polling centres and ballot stuffing, authoritative behaviour of ruling party, biased-stance of law enforcing agencies, forcing opposition polling agents to leave centres.

Sujan came up with the observations at a press conference organised at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the city’s Segunbagicha on Thursday.

Presided over by Sujan president M Hafizuddin Khan, the programme was also addressed by Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder, executive member Dr Hameeda Hossain and central committee coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarker.

Ruling Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam was declared elected in the GCC election held June 26 with a huge margin of votes.

He bagged a total of 400,010 votes while his rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) mayor runner Hasan Uddin Sarker got 197,611 votes.
