BNP has paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Mausoleum marking the 48th Independence Day.
As their chairperson Khaleda Zia has been in jail since February 8, party's senior leaders, led by its standing committee members, placed the wreath at the altar of the memorial at Savar around 9:15 am on Monday.
Later, they went to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-e Bangla Nagar and placed a wreath there around 11:00 am.
They also offered a munajat there seeking salvation of Zia's departed soul.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-chairmen Abdullah Al Noman, Mohammad Shahjahan and AZM Zahid were, among others, present.
Earlier in the morning, BNP hoisted the national and the party flag atop its all offices, including the Nayapaltan central one, on the occasion. The party's central office was also illuminated.
Jatiyatabadi Samajik and Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas), the cultural wing of BNP, arranged a cultural event in the afternoon at Nayapaltan Bhasani auditorium on the occasion.
Earlier, on Saturday, the party chalked out a three-day programme, including holding a discussion and taking out a rally, to celebrate the Independence Day.
The party is scheduled to bring out an Independence Day rally from its central office on Tuesday afternoon.
It will also organise a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on March 31 on the occasion.
According to UNB, the party's different units and associate bodies also took various programmes, including discussions and essay competitions, marking the day.
