BNP leaders Shamim, Bakkar put on remand

A Chattogram court on Tuesday placed BNP organising secretary for Chattogram division Mahbubur Rahman Shamim and city unit general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar on a one-day remand in a case filed for attacking police.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohiuddin Murad passed the order when police produced them before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, said Advocate Abdus Sattar, a counsel of the two BNP leaders.

The court also rejected the bail petitions of the BNP leaders when their lawyers filed those.

Earlier on Monday, plainclothes police arrested Shamim and Bakkar from the city's GEC intersection in the case filed on charge of attacking police on the court premises on Sunday, reports UNB.

On Sunday, a group of BNP leaders and activists swooped on police on the court premises after a court cancelled the bail of party leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Later, a case was filed with Kotwali Police Station against some 150 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies in this connection.
