AL to hold national council in October

The Awami League has decided to hold its next national council in October, three years after the incumbent central committee was formed.

The party’s presidium took the decision in a meeting chaired by Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban in Dhaka on Friday, a leader who was present at the meeting said.

The Awami League holds its council every three years following its charter, reports bdnews24.com.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected president of the party for the eighth consecutive term in the last council held on Oct 23 in 2016.

Obaidul Quader replaced Syed Ashraful Islam as general secretary at the time.

Quader is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore now after he fell ill due to heart complication around a month ago.

The road transport and bridges minister was also diagnosed with a combination of kidney and blood-related ailments.

After Friday’s meeting, the party said in a statement that its presidium decided to form eight divisional committees to strengthen nationwide activities ahead of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 100th birth anniversary celebrations and preparations for its next national council.

“No, the date was not fixed. But a decision was taken to hold the council in October,” one of the leaders who attended the meeting said.

The statement said Hasina ordered reports on and action against the AL leaders, including ministers and MPs, who are not working in the campaigns of party candidates in local government elections.

She expressed her deep sadness at the deaths and injuries in a fire at a high-rise in Banani on Thursday and prayed for the dead in the beginning of the meeting.

The prime minister emphasised total compliance with the building code, installing fire safety system at multi-storey buildings, and strong monitoring by the government agencies to ensure these are adhered to.

She thanked the fire service, armed forces, law enforcers, and volunteers for their brave efforts to rescue the victims of the Banani fire.

The meeting also condemned the recent shootings at two New Zealand mosques during prayers in which 50 people, including five Bangladeshis, were killed.

Hasina extended sympathy to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
