AL-led alliance to get victory again: Obaidul Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today expressed his hope that the grand alliance led by his party will achieve victory again in the next parliamentary election.

“Our grand alliance will win in the upcoming national election. We are hundred per cent hopeful about our victory,” he said.

The Awami League leader, also road transport and bridges minister, came up with the expectation while addressing a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Friday, reports BSS.

Replying to a question, Quader said they cannot predict how many seats they will win in the polls.

“We do not want to believe in any numerical prediction about getting seats in the polls. The people will decide it,” he said.

The AL general secretary said before the 2008 election, BNP had predicted that AL could get 30 seats but BNP itself had got 30 seats in the polls.

This year, some BNP leaders predicted that AL would get only 10 seats, he said. “We do not want to predict who will get how many seats,” he said.

Asked whether there is any apprehension of BNP’s sabotage, Quader said it is the BNP’s old habit of carrying out violent acts.

He said BNP had carried out sabotage, arson attacks and killed innocent people in 2014 and so, the party could do that again.

Replying to a question whether there is any tension over seat sharing among the alliance partners, he said it is natural that there would be bargaining over seat sharing as it’s a part of democracy. But, he said, there is no discord over the issue.

“Here the prime consideration is that which party can win in how many seats. We will select electable and able candidates,” he said.

Asked whether seat sharing with partners of grand alliance has been finalised, he said they have finalised it informally. “When it will be announced, you (everyone) will get it,” he said.

AL Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Legal Affairs Secretary Advocate SM Rezaul Karim, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Engineer Md Abdus Sobur, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Central Working Committee Member Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran were present on the occasion.
