Police foil BNP’s black flag programme, 20 held

Police on Saturday foiled BNP’s black flag showing programme in front of its Nayapaltan central office protesting against the denial of permission to hold a rally in Dhaka city.

When BNP leaders and activists tried to gather in front of their central office at 9:30 am, police chased them and arrested 20 of them.

They also damaged a makeshift stage built in front of the party office to stage their protests.

Police used water cannons, charged baton on the BNP activists to disperse them, leaving two of its leaders-the party chairperson’s adviser Ataur Rahman Dhali and organising secretary Fazlul Haq Milon—injured. They were rushed to hospital.

At one stage, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Moudud Ahmed and Nazrul Islam Khan left the place and entered the party office.

Huge law enforcers were seen deployed in front of the BNP’s central office.

DMP Motijheel Zone ADC Shibli Noman said, “Showing black flag occupying city road is not a peaceful programme. They did not take any prior permission for arranging it.

"We can’t allow any programme that disrupts public life.”

Two days ago on Thursday, BNP announced the programme protesting against the denial of permission for its planned rally that day demanding the release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail, reports UNB.

BNP's chief Khaleda Zia has been put behind bars since February 8, when a special court sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
