PM reassures BD support to Palestinian cause

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday reiterated Bangladesh's support to independent Palestine state, saying the brotherly country enjoys a special place in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh.

She came up with the remarks when visiting Secretary General of the Fatah Movement and President of Palestine Football Association and Olympic Committee General Jibril Rajoub paid a courtesy call on her at her official residence Ganobhaban.

Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said General Jibril Rajoub handed over a letter of the Palestinian President to the Prime Minister.

He mentioned that General Jibril Rajoub categorically mentioned that Palestine will never compromise over the Jerusalem issue.

The Fatah Movement Secretary General recalled with deep gratitude 'Bangabandhu's unequivocal support for the cause of independent Palestine', saying Bangabandhu belonged not only to Bangladesh but also to Palestine.

He also highly appreciated the Prime Minister for her strong support to the Palestinian people in various international fora.

General Jibril Rajoub said Palestine wants a peaceful and non-violent solution to the Middle East crisis. "Israel is unilaterally committing genocide which must be stopped," he said.

Expressing satisfaction over the existing level of cooperation between the two brotherly countries, he said many students from Palestine are studying in the Bangladesh Military Academy.

He informed the Prime Minister that the Hebron Municipality Authority of norther Palestine unanimously decided to name a major road after the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister recalled her first meeting with late Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat in 1984 and said he along with South African President Nelson Mandela and Turkish President Suleyman Demirel had also joined the celebrations of 25 years of Bangladesh's independence in 1997.

She conveyed her greetings to Palestine President Mahmud Abbas.

At the meeting, General Jibril Rajoub invited the Prime Minister to visit Palestine which she accepted, saying she would visit the country at a convenient time.
