Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated 10 multi-storey buildings at city’s Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies as part of her government’s plan to raise the housing facilities of the government employees from the existing eight per cent to 40 per cent.

The prime minister inaugurated the buildings at separate functions at Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies in Dhaka.

The prime minister inaugurated four 20-storey buildings with 532 flats at Motijheel and six 20-storey buildings with 456 flats at Azimpur.

Inaugurating the buildings at Motijheel Government Colony, the prime minister said she herself had seen the living condition of the government employees in those colonies in a very noxious atmosphere which prompted her taking the decision to arrange a better living condition for them.

“I want you to live in a modern and healthy atmosphere with your family after job hours,” she said adding that the government has also raised the salary of the civil servants as well as elevated the status of their posts in services.

Pointing out the country’s progress during the tenure of her government, the prime minister said it could be possible due to sincere service of the government employees.

Making her fervent call to the dwellers of the buildings to maintain austerity in using electricity and water, the premier said the government is providing huge subsidy for every unit of electricity, gas and water.

For making the residential areas liveable and aesthetically beautiful, the prime minister asked them to maintain cleanness of the buildings, stairs, lifts and surroundings, reports BSS.

Sheikh Hasina said similar buildings would be constructed at district and upazila levels so that government employees can live there in a better condition and have working atmosphere.

The prime minister said the old buildings of the colonies would be demolished for park, walk space, ponds and gardens.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Public Works Ministry Dabirul Hossain and Public Works Secretary Shahidullah Khandakar spoke on the occasions.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith also spoke at the function at Azimpur Government Colony.

Officials said the government has taken initiative to construct 23 buildings in Dhaka, Chattogram and other cities with capacity of 9,702 flats.

Out of those, 524 flats were constructed in 2017 while 928 flats including those at Motijheel and Azimpur government colonies were completed this year.

Construction of 8,190 flats for government employees is going on under 19 projects.
