A Bangladeshi New York City police official has committed suicide.
Hemayat Uddin Sarkar, 37, lived with his wife and three-year-old son in the New York City borough of Queens.
Sarkar shot himself on Sunday evening in the basement of his home, the New York Police Department said.
The body has been sent to the city medical examiner’s office. Police have not suggested a motive for the suicide.
Sarkar’s wife, child, father and other members of the family were in the building at the time of the incident.
Leaders of the local Bangladeshi community, including Bangladesh Society General Secretary Ruhul Amin, the society’s Vice President Abdul Khalek Khaer and Bakir Azad, offered their condolences to the family, reports bdnews24.com.
According to locals, Sarkar was born in Sirajganj and came to the US in 2000. He joined the New York City Police Department in 2005.
The New York Police Department says five police officers have committed suicide this year.
A few thousands of New York City’s 49,000 police officers are of Bangladeshi origin.
