Most of the educational institutions have launched online classes on a limited scale due to continuation of the coronavirus lockdown in Bangladesh.

As the shutdown is unlikely to end soon amid the pandemic, schools, colleges and private universities, mostly English-medium kindergartens and English-version schools, are taking online classes.

The academic activities are being done using Google Classroom or Classwork Zoom platforms for the purpose.

Students, teachers and guardians initially used to face problems in adopting the classes, but many have already fixed the trouble using the online platforms.

"We've somehow managed the classes," said a teacher of a private English-medium school in Dhaka.

"We've no other choice in the circumstances but to conduct classes. If classes continue, students can be in touch with daily lessons."

But the teacher said this is not the solution as online platforms cannot fully solve problems like checking students' homework online.

However, Shandija Haque, mother of two kids of class six and eight, expressed satisfaction as her children are now busy with such online studies.

Like others, Priyonto, Subeh Serin and Roopkotha are also happy as they wear headphones and sit in front of a laptop or a desktop to attend the classes daily.

The FE found that these classes used to start from 8:00am and continued until 2:00pm daily before Ramadan.

Now, the classes are going on from 9:00am to 2:00pm.

Almost all English-medium schools have opened classes from class one to class nine through online.

Classes of 10, 11 and 12 are not being held as they were supposed to sit for the O- and A-level exams during the April-June period.

However, the trend of taking online classes is being practiced more in Dhaka-based schools than others outside the capital.

A few schools in major cities, including Chittagong and Khulna, are also conducting online classes.

However, hardly any Bangla-medium schools and colleges are taking classes online.

Some schools have instructed the students of higher classes to follow Sangsad Bangladesh Television channel where classes on different subjects are held.

At university level, private universities are leading the way of taking online classes based on semesters and departments. But they are not regular.

It was learnt that Dhaka University vice-chancellor in a letter recently requested to consider taking online classes, but no initiative is in sight yet.

Kaberi Gayen, chairman of mass communication and journalism department, cited the difficulties in taking online classes from public universities for a lack of smooth Wi-Fi connections.

A good number of students are now in village where they get internet through mobile data. So, it would be quite expensive for them to manage daily classes, she said.

"Many students are now passing hard times back home for losing earnings from private tuitions. So, it's not possible to conduct online classes leaving them," Ms Gayen told the FE.

However, there is no such instruction or guideline from education ministry to continue classes uniformly.

Since the first corona case was detected in Dhaka in early March, educational institutes have faced pressure for closure to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

Due to the reason, semester examinations and school final examinations were also suspended.

As the government has instructed educational institutions to keep shut until the end of May, uncertainty looms large in taking final exams.

Although the government declared to hold HSC exams from June 05, stakeholders are still in doubt about it.
