Month-long traffic campaign begins in city

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) began the month-long traffic campaign on Wednesday with a view to strengthening the on-going drive against traffic rule violators to bring discipline in traffic management system.

“We have started month-long traffic campaign aimed at bringing order in Dhaka traffic management system and making aware people of the traffic rule,” DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia said.

Police personnel with the help of 322 rover scouts have started working with setting up 40 check posts across the DMP area since this morning, reports BSS.

A model traffic system is being introduced stretching from the capital’s Jahangir Gate to Gulishtan’s Zero Point during the month-long campaign. In the model system, vehicles will be plied by maintaining signal lights.

DMP personnel were seen taking action against human haulers as its chief’s Tuesday’s announcement about off-limits impoverished small public carrier movement on roads. The DMP chief at a press conference said, “We have also decided to take off human haulers from the city streets under its jurisdiction as they have no road permits.”

It is also taking action against the passenger buses which are loading and unloading passengers anywhere without the designated 121 bus stops and those which are not keeping their doors shut until reaching the next bus stops.

The DMP commissioner in his announcement also said that route permit of the vehicles would be cancelled in case of traffic rule violation and appointing drivers on contract basis.

Asaduzzaman requested the owners of refuelling stations not to sell fuel to motorcyclists having no safety helmets with them.

Referring to traffic mismanagement on the roads and highways, he said “It will take time to bring complete discipline in the traffic management as the current situation has not been created in a day rather it is the culmination of the long time mismanagement.”

The DMP chief requested city dwellers to use zebra crossings, footbridges and underpasses while crossing the roads to avoid accidents.
