Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen on Monday came down heavily on Britain and the European Union for pouring in foreign direct investment into Myanmar despite allegations of genocide against the country.
Talking to the newsmen at his office on Monday, the minister said that he had raised this issue during his meeting with Lord Karan Bilimoria.
Lord Bilimoria is the vice president of the British-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship Group.
"I have told the Lord that the cumulative FDI to Bangladesh from Britain is $2.5 billion since independence, but Britain’s FDI to Myanmar is much higher than that," the minister said.
He said that, according to statistics, the FDI into Myanmar from the UK in 2021 was $2.3 billion.
And in the last five years, the UK invested $7.5 billion, he said adding that though Britain is a champion of human rights and always opposed genocide and ethnic cleansing, it is a huge FDI to that country, which is contradictory.
According to the minister, the European Union is providing everything but arms (EBA) facilities to Myanmar despite the fact that the country has a very poor record on human rights.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed ambassador of Kuwait also met the foreign minister on Monday.
Referring to this meeting, the foreign minister said that he had requested the ambassador to provide assistance for the development projects in Bangladesh from their development fund.
Responding to another question, the foreign minister said that the visit of Sultan of Brunei to Dhaka was very fruitful as Brunei agreed to supply a significant quantity of LNG to Bangladesh.
