Minor dies after being hit by IU teacher’s car

An 11-year-old student died after being hit allegedly by the car of a teacher of Islamic University in Kushtia on Thursday night.

The deceased Umme Rukaiya, daughter of Monohar Hossain, a resident of the village in the upazila, was a Class V student of Srirampur Government Primary School, reports UNB.

Quoting local people, Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam said that the accident took place on Kushtia-Jhenaidah Highway at noon as a speeding car of IU political science department chairperson Assistant Professor Sherina Khatun hit Rukaiya while she (Rukaiya) was returning home from school, leaving her seriously injured on the spot.

Later, local people rescued the injured and took her to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment where the attending doctors referred her to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for better treatment.

Rukaiya succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital in the night, the police official said.

An unnatural death case was lodged with the Shailkupa police station in this connection, the OC added.

Sherina Khatun could not be reached over the phone despite repeated attempts to her comment in this regard. She was in the car when the accident occurred.

Rukaiya, however, was buried at her family graveyard at Modondanga village in the upazila on Friday morning.
