The government has moved to cancel the monthly pay order (MPO) scheme facilities of SM Siraj-ud-Daula, the suspended principal of a madrasa who is accused in cases over the killing of student Nusrat Jahan Rafi after sexually harassing her.
The Directorate of Madrasah Education also wrote to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Thursday requesting suspension of MPO facilities of Afsar Uddin, another teacher of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa.
Afsar was arrested after Nusrat, an Alim candidate, was burnt when she went to the madrasa to sit the exams equivalent to HSC on April 6.
Siraj had landed in jail last month after Nusrat levelled sexual harassment charges against him.
The teenage girl died during treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, prompting the government to pledge justice for Nusrat.
Nusrat said she had been attacked for refusing to withdraw the charges against Siraj.
After Nusrat succumbed to her burn injuries on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina immediately ordered stern action against those involved with what happened to the girl.
Police have already arrested and remanded in custody a number of people, including students of the madrasa, in the case over the killing of Nusrat that triggered protests at different places across the country.
Thousands of people in tears bade bye to Nusrat as she was buried in her family graveyard on Thursday evening.
The High Court has said it will intervene if any negligence is found in the investigation into the death of Nusrat.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil issued the warning in response to an appeal made by Supreme Court lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman.
The lawyer filed the appeal along with media reports on Nusrat's death with the court, saying that a judicial probe should be carried out to identify the culprits for immediately bringing them to justice.
“So far we knew the matter has been transferred to PBI [Police Bureau of Investigation] for investigation. And the prime minister herself took care of it. We were also in grief. We did not want this case to fade away like Sagar-Runi or Mitu and Tonu cases," said the court.
