Low-income group hard hit by soaring prices of veg

JOYPURHAT, Sept 23: The low and middle-income groups in the district are in a difficult situation for soaring prices of vegetables.

Vegetables prices are on rising trend both in retail and wholesale markets from the previous week, causing unbearable problem for the consumers.

Each kg of brinjal is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45, bitter gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60, pointed gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 45, spinach at Tk 25 to Tk 35, water spinach at Tk 25 to Tk 32, okra at Tk 50 to Tk 55 and snake bean at Tk 36 to Tk 42.

Per kg radish is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45, cucumber at Tk 40 to Tk 50, arum at Tk 50 to Tk 60, onion at Tk 70 to Tk 80, garlic at Tk 70 to Tk 75 and snake gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 42 in the retail markets.

President of Joypurhat Chamber of Commerce and Industry Masudur Rahman said they are monitoring the kitchen markets to tame the vegetable prices. "Some syndicates are the actors behind the scene", he added.
