Lighting kills 22 in 24 hours, 144 since January

Lightning has claimed 22 lives in the country in the last 24 hours alone and 144 since January 18.

Information officer to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Omor Faruk Dewan revealed this to FE on Thursday.

On 29 and 30 April at least 29 people were killed and in month of April 58 people were killed informed the ministry official.

The ministry has taken number of initiatives to deal with the alarming issue.

Under the ministry over three million palm trees have been planted across the country to protect people from lightening.

Furthermore, the ministry has already set up lightning detecting sensors at eight districts Dhaka and Chittagong on an experimental basis at a cost of Tk 200 million.

The victims of lighting mostly were farmers who work on open field during heavy rainfall, and often ignore the caution notice, added the ministry official.

The ministry has also run awareness programme including opening control rooms of the ministry in different districts, special caution announcement for farmers and in coastal areas.

Anyone could know the pre-caution notice through their smartphone as development after installation of the lightning detective sensors, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
