Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has implemented a project at an estimated cost of around Tk 7.99 billion to ensure a sound rural road network in the northern region of the country.
Ali Ahmed, additional chief engineer of LGED said, "We have implemented 365 schemes of the seven-year project ‘Improvement of Rural Roads, Bridges, Culverts and other Infrastructure of Backward Upazilas’ in 53 disadvantaged upazilas in Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Sirajganj and Bogra districts till June last."
Under the project, more than 105.70-km upazila roads, 323-km union roads and 502.74-km village roads were developed as well as 1060-meter bridges and culverts were constructed to improve road connectivity, said the engineer.
Gogram union parishad chairman of Godagari upazila Mujibur Rahman said road connectivity is very important for uplifting live and livelihood condition of grassroots people, reports BSS.
"We have got the chance of uplifting our socio-economic condition through the best uses of various infrastructure developments," he added.
Rahman said the rural level improved roads have already started helping reduce transport cost, improve marketing system, increase production and market facilities of agricultural products.
