Jute mill workers to get arrears by next month, minister says

Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi has assured that all workers of 25 shuttered state-run jute mills of the country will get their arrears within November.

“We have received Tk 17.91 billion so far from the Finance Department to pay the arrears of workers of 8 jute mills. The workers are getting their arrears gradually through their bank account and saving certificates," the minister said at a press conference at the secretariat on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The payment process of two more jute mills (Hafiz Jute mills of Chattogram and Eastern Jute mill of Khulna) will begin from October 25, the minister said.

“Hopefully all jute mill workers will be paid all their arrears within next month,” Gazi said.

“The government has formed two bodies for giving recommendations to revive the jute industry”, he added.

“Hopefully all of the closed jute mills will resume with new dimensions where experienced workers would get the scope of employment,” he said.

Earlier, the government shut down operations of 25 state-run jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) by providing 100 per cent dues of some 25,000 workers of the mills.
