GOPALGANJ, Aug 28: Jute harvest is going on in full swing in the district.
Farmers are also happy over the present prices as the newly-harvesting jute has started arriving in the local markets. It is being sold at Tk 1,800 per maund depending on qualities.
The local markets would see a strong supply of the new jute after 15 to 20 more days as only 30 to 35 per cent harvest of cash crop has so far been completed in the district.
According to the Department Of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, a total of 24,538 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation in five upzilas of the district with the production target of 2,41,645 tonnes.
Kabir Thakur, a farmer of Gopalpur village under Sadar upzila, said he cultivated jute on five bighas of land and got about 75 maunds of production. He expects to earn Tk 0.13 million from it.
Samir Kumar Goshwami, deputy director, agriculture, said favourable weather condition, timely supply of agri inputs are main reasons of getting such output. "Our field workers regular visited the fields and gave necessary suggestion to the growers", he added.
