The 10th Jatiya Sangsad on the first day of its 21st session (Budget Session) on Tuesday unanimously adopted obituary references on a number of distinguished personalities, including a sitting MP, two former ministers, an ex-state minister, a former whip and four other former MPs.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the obituary references separately with brief resumes on those who died since prorogation of the 20th session of the 10th parliament, reports BSS.
The Speaker while moving the references said the House expresses its deep shock at the deaths of sitting parliament member (MP) and former minister AKM Maidul Islam, former cabinet members M Shamsul Islam and Mahmudur Rahman, former state minister ABM Shahjahan, ex-whip Alhaj Syed Wahidul Alam, formers MPs Professor Dr Mohammad Shahab Uddin, Khandkar Muhammad Khurram, Begum Amina Bari, Chaman Ara Begum and M Iqbal, assistant librarian of the Sangsad Secretariat.
The house also condoles the death of poet Belal Chowdhury, Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury, language movement hero national Professor Mustafa Noorul Islam, language hero Chandu Miah, Bir Pratik Hamidul Haque, liberation war organiser and former economic advisor of Mujib Nagar government Abul Khair Chowdhury.
Dr Shirin also expressed deep shock at the death passengers who died by aircraft crash in Algeria and Cuba along with accidental deaths home and abroad.
Participating in the discussion on AKM Maidul Islam, Opposition Leader Begum Rawshan Ershad expressed deep shock at the death of Maidul and conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
Besides, members from both treasury and opposition benches including finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, shipping minister Shajahan Khan, chief whip ASM Feroz, state minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga, state minister for social welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Jatiya Party Secretary General AMB Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Professor Ali Ashraf, Kazi Feroz Rashid, Fakhrul Imam, Begum Noor-e-Hasna Lily Chowdhury, Nurul Islam Omar, Rawshan Ara Mannan, took part in the discussion.
They conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the lasting peace of his departed soul.
The lawmakers also observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls. Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls.
As a mark of respect to the death of the sitting member Maidul Islam, after adoption of the obit reference and munajat, the speaker adjourned the sitting of the house at 12:51 noon to resume it again tomorrow June 6 at 10:30am.
