‘Joy Bangla’ should be used as a national slogan from the upcoming Victory Day, the High Court has suggested.
Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader issued an order following the arguments of the attorney general and senior lawyers in the Supreme Court on Tuesday based on a writ petition on the issue, reports bdnews24.com.
The court left the issue for the next hearing on Jan 14.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Abdullah-Al-Mahmud Bashar represented the state while lawyer Bashir Ahmed appeared for the petitioners.
The court heard the statements of senior lawyer Yusuf Hossain Humayun, and former law ministers Shafique Ahmed and Abdul Matin Khasru and Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Aminuddin.
“Joy Bangla was the key slogan of freedom fighters. They lost their lives and were martyred by chanting the slogan. So the slogan should be included in the constitution as a national slogan,” Humayun told reporters.
Aminuddin said: “Bangabandhu’s March 07 speech was made part of the constitution. The last part of that speech was Joy Bangla. So, Joy Bangla is part of our constitution. Therefore, Joy Bangla should be declared a national slogan. ”
The deputy attorney general said, “Joy Bangla is the slogan for our independence and national unity. It’s a symbol of inspiration.”
