Laxmipur ADC, UNO seek apology for power abuse

Laxmipur additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and Sadar UNO have sought an unconditional apology to the High Court for abusing their power to jail a former civil surgeon recently.

ADC Sheikh Morshedul Islam and UNO Kamruzzaman sought the apology in the petitions their lawyers filed with a High Court bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah on Wednesday morning.

On December 5, the High Court summoned them to appear before it at 10:30 am today (Wednesday) and to explain a three-month imprisonment meted out to the former civil surgeon for allegedly assaulting the ADC.

It came up with the order following a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyers Advocate Kamal Hossain Niazi and Advocate Ashfaqur Rahman.

The High Court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the misuse of the mobile court out of a personal grudge should not be declared illegal.

Earlier on December 4, former Civil Surgeon of Laxmipur Dr Salahuddin Sharif was sentenced to three months imprisonment by the mobile court, led by Kamruzzaman, for allegedly assaulting Sheikh Morshedul Islam.

On that day, around 10:15am, Dr Salauddin and Morshedul went to pick up their grandson and son respectively from kindergarten Kakoli Shishu Angan in the district town.

Then they were locked in a brawl over an act of shoving at the gate. During the brawl, the ADC slapped the retired civil surgeon, with the latter acting in retaliation.

Later, police detained Dr Salauddin and produced him before a mobile court led by the Sadar UNO, which jailed the civil surgeon for three months.

Meanwhile, Mir Shawkat Ali, an additional district magistrate (ADM), granted bail for Dr Salahuddin Sharif in the wake of his lawyer Rasel Mahmud Munna filing a bail petition with the court.
