The International Anti-Corruption Day was observed in the country and elsewhere across the world on Sunday aimed at raising voice against the growing culture of corruption.
The theme of this year's Anti-Corruption Day was 'Together we are united against corruption.'
To mark the day the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and some other bodies arranged various programmes including discussion, human-chain, mass signature, poster and cartoon exhibitions.
Chairman of the commission Iqbal Mahmud inaugurated the event and a mass signature programme at his office in the morning, reports UNB.
The mass signature programme will continue until December 14. Besides, a human chain led by the ACC chairman and commissioners was formed in front of its office where officials and employees of commission, its panel lawyers, members of Dhaka City Anti-Corruption Committee, Bangladesh Girls Guide, Boys Scout, Ansar and Bangladesh National Cadet Core took part.
All local offices of DNCC and DSCC also observed the day by holding a rally and a discussion programme the city.
On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and designated Secretary General of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as secretariat for the Convention's Conference of States Parties.
The Assembly also fixed 9th December as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise awareness against corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it. The Convention entered into force in December 2005.
