India backs sustainable Rohingya repatriation

India reiterates its commitment for an early, safe and sustainable repatriation of 'displaced persons' from Rakhine.

This was expressed by Indian Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar in a recent letter to the Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, a foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

"As a neighbour of both Bangladesh and Myanmar we fully understand the urgency of the issue and an early, safe , and sustainable repatriation of displaced persons from Rakhine is in the collective interest of all," Mr Jaishankar said in the letter.

The letter was sent to thank Bangladesh for its support to India during the election for the non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

"We deeply value your support extended towards India's success at this election and look forward to a meaningful and a productive tenure at the UNSC" the Indian foreign minister added.

Mr Jaishankar also assured Dr Momen of India's 'steadfast and continued support' to Bangladesh in its fight with Covid pandemic.

The Indian foreign ministry said that India 'as a firm believer of reformed multilateralism', will be keen to work with other countries in seeking comprehensive and innovative solutions to peace development and security.
