Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded at Daulatdia ghat

Several hundreds of vehicles remained stranded at the Daulatdia end of the Daulatdia-Paturia ferry route in Rajbarhi district on Wednesday.

Disruption in ferry services resulted in this situation, witnesses say.

More than 400 goods trucks and 100 passenger buses and cars continue to be stranded since Saturday morning creating almost a four-kilometre traffic jam, witnesses and officials say.

At present, vehicles are crossing over through three of the four ferries at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat. The pontoon at Ferry Ghat No. 5 has broken down and it is closed for repairs, according to BIWTC Daulatdia Office.

Mahbub Hossain, assistant manager of BIWTC's Daulatdia Ferry Ghat, said the repairs at Ferry Ghat No. 5 are underway.

Abdullah Rony, manager of BIWTC's Daulatdia ferry terminal, said ferry services on Daulatdia-Paturia route are disrupted also due to the navigability crisis.

Besides, only 16 ferries are now providing services on the route and those are not enough, he said.

The BIWTC officer felt the need for further four to six ferries on the route to smoothen the ferry services.
