HC stays BAIRA election schedule for four weeks

The High Court on Sunday stayed the operation of the election schedule of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA), an association of manpower exporters, for four weeks.

The High Court bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order with a ruling after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

In the ruling, the High Court wanted to know from the respondents to explain in four weeks as to why the failure or inaction of the respondents to set aside the revived election schedule of the BAIRA dated October 19 and final voter list there under published by the election board of the BAIRA should not be declared illegal.

It also wanted to know from the respondents to explain as to why the respondents should not be directed to set aside the revived election schedule of the BAIRA dated October 19 and the final voter list there under published by the BAIRA election board.

It also wanted to know from the respondents to explain as to why the respondents should not be directed to reschedule or issue a fresh or new election schedule of BAIRA and hold the election within a given timeframe.

Ministry of Commerce, Director of the Trade Organizations (DTO), BAIRA and the election board of BAIRA have been asked to comply with the ruling.

Barrister Akhtar Imam and Barrister Rashna Imam appeared in the court for the petitioners.

Two people, including Md Ruhul Amin, who was dropped from the BAIRA voter list, filed the writ petition recently.

The election is scheduled to be held on December 11. But the High Court stayed the schedule for four weeks after hearing the writ petition, said Barrister Rashna Imam.
