The High Court has sought the report of Dhaka University’s Pharmacy Faculty and Biomedical Research Centre that found harmful elements in packaged milk available in kitchen markets.

The bench of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir lytton asked Barrister Sardar MR Hasan, a lawyer of Bangladesh Standard Testing Institution (BSTI), to collect the report and submit to it on Sunday.

The court passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed by advocate Tanvir Ahmed, a Supreme Court lawyer.

Researchers of Dhaka University's Pharmacy Faculty and Biomedical Research Centre recently revealed their study raising consumers' eyebrows, as they found many harmful substances in some brands of packaged milk.

Antibiotics, detergent and coliform and other forms of hazardous bacterial organisms were found in the pasteurised milk products of five popular brands, local media reported citing the study.

This report runs contrary to a report of Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution that found no harmful substance in 14 brands of milk. During the hearing, the court also accepted the BSTI report.

Dhaka University's pharmacy department on Friday refused to take any responsibility for the report done by the Pharmacy Faculty and Biomedical Research Centre, landing it in controversy.

In a media statement, the department had claimed that the milk test was not conducted by them, rather it was a personal research.
