The High Court has reduced jail term of former minister of BNP led government Nazmul Huda in a bribery case.
Nazmul Huda has to serve a four-year imprisonment from seven years term awarded by a trial court in the case.
The order came on Wednesday after re-hearing appeals by the Huda's challenging the trial court's decision.
Earlier, Huda was sentenced to prison in 2007 in the case by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
A Dhaka court then convicted Huda and ordered a seven-year imprisonment. His wife Sigma Huda was also convicted in the case and got a three-year term.
The High Court had earlier acquitted them, but the Appellate Division scrapped it and sent it back for a fresh hearing.
On Wednesday, the High Court said the time Huda’s wife served in jail until now will be counted as her sentence.
According to a bdnews24.com report, the former minister will have to surrender within 45 days after the order reaches the trial court, the court said.
It, however, did not issue any order over the trial court fining him Tk 25 million.
ACC counsel Khurshid Alam Khan said the fine has been upheld as the court did not say anything on it.
Nazmul Huda was a cabinet member in the BNP administration and was later ousted from the party. Huda now heads his own party Bangladesh Nationalist Alliance
