HC orders to complete Nazmul Huda’s trial in six months

The High Court HAS summarily rejected a petition filed by former communication minister Nazmul Huda to cancel trial proceedings of a case filed against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on February 19, 2020, for filing a false bribery case against former chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.

A HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order on Tuesday and also directed the Special Court-9 of Dhaka to complete the trial proceedings of the case against Nazmul Huda within six months.

Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan appeared in the hearing on behalf of the ACC while deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

“During the hearing, the court observed that this kind of case is very detrimental for the image of the Supreme Court. Everyone has to protect the image of the apex court. If a case is filed against the verdict of the Supreme Court judges, then there will be no judicial system,” said deputy attorney general Amin Uddin Manik.

The ACC Director Syed Iqbal Hossain filed the case with the ACC's integrated district office in Dhaka on February 19 of 2020.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Benjir Ahmed, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the former minister.

Nazmul Huda filed the case against the former chief justice SK Sinha with Shahbagh Police Station on September 27, 2018, for demanding bribe from him and changing the judgement of a graft case that had already been disposed of.

After filing a false case against Justice SK Sinha, Huda told journalists that former chief justice sought Tk 32.5 million bribe from him in 2017.

The ACC after probing the case for one and a half years found the allegations baseless and false. On December 4 of 2019, discharging SK Sinha from the charges of the case, the national anti-graft watchdog submitted the final report.
