A High Court division bench of the Supreme Court has disposed of a total of 1501 cases, a significant number in disposing of cases in a single day, related to bail prayer and filed from 2016 to 2019.
The High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice K M Zahid Sarwar on Wednesday passed the orders after disposing of the rules issued earlier in the cases.
Sources said some other High Court division benches also deal with hundreds of cases on the day as a part of an initiative to reduce the case backlog in the courts.
Before delivering the orders the High Court bench headed by Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif said the rules have been declared absolute in the cases where the accused didn’t abuse the bail granted to them and against whom there is no allegation on behalf of the state.
The rules have been rejected in the cases of those whose bails have been cancelled, the court also said in the order.
Sources said, after taking the charge Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has taken some initiatives to reduce the case backlog in the courts. As a part of that initiative, the Chief Justice sent the 1501 cases to the bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice K M Zahid Sarwar for quick disposal of the cases.
The High Court bench of Justice Syed Md Ziaul Karim and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar disposed of 244 criminal petitions on that day. The HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ali disposed of total 285 cases, bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman disposed of 485 cases.
