Govt working to bring back two fugitive killers of Bangabandhu

The government is working sincerely to bring back two fugitive killers of Bangabandhu from abroad.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this at a function at TSC auditorium of Dhaka University on Monday.

“The government filed cases with the courts of Canada and the United States to bring back Major (retd) Nur Chowdhury and Major (retd) Rashed Chowdhury,” he said.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Quader said the demand to bring the six convicted fugitive killers of Bangabandhu back home is increasing day by day. “Talks continue with the US government to extradite Rashed, cancelling his political asylum.”

“Canada’s policy does not allow sending a person, who is convicted with death sentence, back to his country. But, we are continuing talks with the Canadian government for extradition of Nur Chowdhury,” he said.

The six fugitive killers of Bangabandhu are Colonel (dismissed) Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Lt Colonel (relieved) Shariful Haque Dalim, Major (retd) Nur Chowdhury, Major (retd) Rashed Chowdhury, Captain Abdul Majed and Risaldar Moslehuddin Khan, reports BSS.

Five of the convicts — Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, and Mohiuddin Ahmed — were executed on January 27, 2010 for killing Bangabandhu and most of his family members on August 15, 1975. Another killer Aziz Pasha died in Zimbabwe in 2001.

Quader said: “Who gave the protection of the killers through announcement of indemnity ordinance that was again incorporated in the country’s Constitution through its fifth amendment?…I asked BNP the question many times, but they did not answer yet. Today I also ask the same question”.

He inaugurated a sign collection campaign, iPetition, through the website link <https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-for-deportation- of-killer-nur-chowdhury> aiming to raise the demand for deportation of killer Nur Chowdhury.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Dr Dipu Moni, Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Prof Mijanur Rahman, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, its General Secretary Golam Rabban, BCL DU Unit General Secretary Saddam Hossain, among others, spoke at the meeting.
