The government is going to formulate a new law and amend the existing prison rules to turn all the jails of the country into correction centres.
Law Minister Anisul Huq came up with the remark while addressing a programme organised on the occasion of National Legal Aid Day 2018 at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city on Saturday.
“The Prime Minister has strictly instructed that no one should be imprisoned without justice and the government has taken various initiatives to conduct speedy trials of all the cases,” he said.
To reduce the miseries of poor prisoners and finish their trials at the shortest possible time, a sustainable and extended legal structure is one of the prominent priorities of the present government, Anisul said.
“To speed up the rehabilitation process, the government is emphasising the importance of providing legal assistance to prisoners for defending themselves,” he added.
The National Legal Services Day is observed every year on April 28 to reach the fruits of government legal aid to all, especially the poor and underprivileged ones, ensuring legal rights of every citizen of the country, reports UNB.
