The government is ready to face a cyclone that is likely to hit this month, said State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman on Wednesday.
"There's a chance of a cyclone hitting the Bay of Bengal this month. We (government) are conscious about it and taking preparation to face any calamities due to the cyclone," he said, while briefing media at his Secretariat office about the programme on the International Day for Disaster Reduction to be observed on October 13 (today).
He said the programme will be inaugurated at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually join the inaugural programme which will be presided over by the state minister for disaster management and relief.
Mr Rahman said Bangladesh has been observing the day since 1989 with an aim to create awareness among the people to reduce risks of cyclone.
About the government's success in reducing risks of cyclone, he said the government has taken a project to build disaster resilient houses.
Under the project, a total of 94,338 houses have so far been built.
"Work is underway to build 44,909 more houses under the scheme," he said.
Quoting Global Forecast System (GFS) of America, he said there might be a strong cyclone in the Bay during the current month.
The GFS forecast says there will be a low pressure on the Bay of Bebgal on October 17.
Later it might hit coastal areas of Andrah Pradesh and Paschim Banga states of India and parts of Sundarban in Bangladesh.
The probable cyclone might be transformed into a super cyclone like that of Amphan.
"The meteorologists are constantly monitoring the situation. They informed us that more observations are needed to take decision," said Mr Rahman.
