The government has a plan to involve 20 million women directly in economic activities across the country under a programme of the Women and Children Affairs Ministry.

Meher Afroze Chumki, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs, said the contribution of women in the country's economic development is the most as the country is going to become a middle-income one relaying on the women labourers.

"About 4.0 million women are employed in the garment sector that earns the highest foreign remittance. The agriculture sector also depends on women to a large extend," Chumki said.

She said this while addressing the inaugural function of a training programme for women entrepreneurs at the conference room of OGSB Hospital and Institute in Dhaka, reports BSS.

The ministry and Association for Rights and Peace (ARP) organised the 'Skill Development Training Programme for Women Entrepreneurs at Upazila Level'.

Under programme, 9360 women from 155 upazilas across the country would be developed as entrepreneurs, said the report.

The women are yet to turn into owners from workers, the minister said, adding that they have to be owners.

Programme Director Md Mahmud Ali presided over the inaugural function, while Mizanur Rahman, additional secretary (administration) of Women and Children Affairs Ministry, was also present.

Mahmuda Sarmin Benu, additional secretary (development), and social worker Anwara Tofayel and ARP Executive Director Asmaul Hosna, among others were also attended at the programme.
