Govt imposes fishing ban in Sundarbans until August 31

The government has imposed a ban on fishing in all canals in Sundarbans area from July 1 to August 31 to ensure safe breeding and preservation of fish and other aquatic animals.

This fishing ban has been imposed immediately after the end of a another ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal that continued till June 30, reports UNB.

Fishing will remain prohibited in nearly 400 canals to ensure safe breeding and preservation of fish and stop illegal fishing using poison. Canals with more than 25 feet width will remain out it purview of the ban, said Forest Department officials.

East Sundarban's Chandpai Range Officer Md Shahin Kabir said all the fishermen were informed about the ban earlier. However, limited passes will be provided for fishing in the big rivers.

Sundarban Management Committee, Community Patrol Group (CPG), Village Tiger Response Teams (VTRT) and Wild Team will work to implement the ban along with the Forest Department.

Local fishermen expressed frustration the authorities concerned imposed the ban without arranging any alternative livelihood for them.
