Govt asks RMG factory owners to pay wages, festival bonus in time  

The government, on Saturday, called upon garment factory owners to pay the workers’ wages for the month of April in time and also to pay festival allowances before Eid.  

It also asked not to terminate or lay off any workers amid the ongoing corona virus pandemic.

The call came at the 64th tripartite consultative committee meeting headed by State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian at Sromo Bhaban in the city.

The workers, owners and government’s members of the TCC joined the meeting through video conference.

“If factory owners want to reopen their respective units to run the economy instructed by the Prime Minister, they have to strictly comply with the required health safety guidelines,” Ms Sufian said.

Measures must be taken through coordinated efforts among the authorities concerned like Industrial Police, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments and health department, she added.

Monnujan also stated that workers health safety must be given the top priority and ensured. 

Labour Secretary KM Ali Azam, DIFE Inspector General Shibnath Roy and National Workers League President Fazlul Haque Montu were present at the meeting.

Bangladesh Employers Federation President Kamran T Rahman, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)  President Dr Rubana Huq, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) Senior Vice President Mohammed Hatem, Bangladesh National Socialist Labour Front President Rajekuzzaman Ratan, Bangladesh Labour Federation General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khan and Bangladesh Trade Union Kendro General Secretary Dr Wazedul Islam Khan, among others, joined through video conference.
