The Supreme Court will hear two appeals on Wednesday challenging a High Court order that stalled the Gazipur City Corporation polls for three months.
The SC bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, is set to hear the petitions filed by two mayoral candidates—AL candidate Zahangir Alam and BNP candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, sent the petitions to the bench after hearing both appeals, reports bdnews24.com.
On Sunday, the HC stayed the Gazipur election scheduled for May 15.
It also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the inclusion of six administrative areas in Dhaka district into Gazipur electoral areas should not be declared illegal.
BNP mayoral candidate filed a petition challenging the HC order.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission decided to challenge a HC order that stalled the polls.
The commission’s decision came two days after the court stayed the polls responding to a writ petition filed by local Awami League leader and Shimulia-1 Union Parishad Chairman ABM Azharul Islam.
Nine days prior to the polls, Islam objected to the inclusion of six administrative areas of his union as part of Gazipur city.
