Gas supply yet to return to normal

Natural gas supply situation did not return to complete normalcy until Tuesday evening, although Bibiyana's four gas wells -- of its total six wells -- which were forced shut on technical ground on Sunday, came online.

The fifth gas well is expected to reinitiate gas supply from tomorrow (Thursday), said sources.

However, production of natural gas from the sixth well was uncertain, as the well was damaged when sand came out through it while producing gas, they added.

Overall natural gas production from Bibiyana gas-field increased to around 1,100 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) with the resuming of gas production from four wells on Tuesday from around 800 mmcfd on Sunday.

Meanwhile, consumers had to suffer for the third straight day on Tuesday with little improvement of the supply situation amid low gas pressure and electricity outages.

Industrial output was affected due to lower-than-expected gas pressure, and household consumers also suffered to cook their foods.

"We have started mitigating the gas supply crisis due to whole-hearted efforts of our efficient engineers," the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources said in a statement on Tuesday.

The ministry thanked the consumers for being patient during the crisis situation.

Meanwhile, Chevron, the Bibiayana plant's operator, has initiated investigation over the unplanned shutdown of its six gas wells.

The company would submit its report to the state-run Petrobangla on completion of the investigation, said sources.
