Fresh violence in Rakhine quite concerning: US

Visiting US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells has described the current situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine state as “quite concerning”.

The foreign ministry said Wells made the comment while discussing the issue with Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on Tuesday, the first day of her two-day first visit to Bangladesh.

Ali pointed to the evolving situation in Myanmar and the recent initiatives taken by the government of Bangladesh.

At least 109 people were killed in the recent violence in Rakhine, most of them militants, but also members of the security forces and civilians.

A previous round of insurgent attacks in October prompted a ferocious military response that displaced 87,000 Rohingya people and was dogged by allegations of atrocities, according to bdnews24.com.
