Four die as cargo vessel sinks in Buriganga

Four people were killed as a sand-laden cargo vessel, waiting for repair work near a dockyard, sank along with them in the Burigranga River in Dhaka's Keraniganj early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Babu, 19, Mostafa, 55, and Mohibullah, 60, of Pirojpur and Lutfar Rahman, 40, of Jhalakati.

Shah Zaman, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj Police Station, said the sand-laden cargo vessel, waiting for repair work at the dockyard, sank around 3:00am near Afaz Dockyard, leaving its four staff dead.

He said two masters of the cargo, Taslim-1, swam ashore.

On information, the divers went to the spot and retrieved the bodies of four of the cargo vessel staff, UNB reported, quoting Imran Hossain, an officer at the Shyampur fire service station,

He said they have handed over the bodies to Jajira Police Outpost.
