Police claimed to have identified four people who were behind Friday's arson attacks on Hindu houses in a village of the district.
Superintendent of the district police Mizanur Rahman revealed the information on Saturday.
Jamaat-e-Islami activists carried out the arson attacks under their leadership to create unrest ahead of the next parliamentary elections, the SP said.
“Sadar Upazila Ulema Dal Convener Enamul Haque Majid, local BNP leader Masud Rana Sholowasha Jamme Mosque Imam Shirajul Islam and local Jamaat activist Mostain Billah were seen leading the attacks.” he said.
“The individual killed in the clash with police and most of those detained over the violence are local Jamaat activists,” he told reporters after inspecting the scene on Saturday.
Kotowali Police Station OC Babul Miah said that police raided their homes on Friday night, but they had already fled.
Meanwhile, bdnews24.com report says, police have detained 53 people in connection with the arson attacks.
SP Mizanur Rahman also said police filed two cases at the Gangachara and Kotowali Police Stations over the incidents.
A team of Awami League led by its Organising Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury also visited the spot on Saturday.
Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that no mercy would be shown to those who would try to disrupt communal harmony.
A three-member investigation committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Abu Rafa Md Arif, is probing the incident
The district administration is making special arrangements to compensate the victims of the attacks.
The affected people have been given two bundles of tin and Tk 3,000, said Sadar Upazila UNO Ziaur Rahman. The administration will also bear the cost of rebuilding the homes.
Some dry food has also been provided by the administration, he said.
Security measures in the area have been strengthened, said Sadar Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Saifur Rahman.
