Flood situation slightly improves in Brahmaputra, Ganges basins

Flood situation improved slightly in Brahmaputra and Ganges basins after water levels of major rivers of the regions receded today (Monday) due to dwindling of onrush of hilly water from upstream.

Water levels of major rivers in Brahmaputra basin marked fall despite sporadic incident of riverbank erosion at several places in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today, said officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

They, however, said water levels of major rivers in the basin were still flowing above the danger levels at eight points in five northern districts,

BWDB executive engineer for its Kurigram and Lalmonirhat divisions Ariful Islam said riverbank protection works continue at vulnerable points in these districts although flood situation is improving there.

Executive Engineer for BWDB’s Gaibandha division Mokhlesur Rahman said the flood situation improved in the district during the last 24 hours.

BWBD data showed that water levels of the Dharla River marked fall by 5 cm at Kurigram, while Ghagot River water level decreased by 5 cm in Gaibandha point and Brahmaputra water level receded by 13 cm at Noonkhawa and 19 cm at Chilmari points during the period.

Besides, the water levels of the Jamuna River deceased by one cm at Fulchhari point, three cm at Bahadurabad point and one cm at Sariakandi point, while went up by two cm at Kazipur point and one cm at Sirajganj point during the last 24 hours ending 9:00am.

The Brahmaputra River was still flowing 19 cm above the danger level at Chilmari point, while Dharla River 39 cm above at Kurigram point and Ghagot River was flowing 24 cm above at Gaibandha point.

The Jamuna was flowing 47 cm above the danger level at Fulchhari point, 53 cm above at Bahadurabad point, while 60 cm at Sariakandi point, 34 cm above at Kazipur point and 39 cm above at Sirajganj point at 9 am today.

Flood situation improved in the Ganges basin today since the water levels of many rivers in the basin receded for the fifth consecutive day, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.

Of the 30 river points monitored in Ganges basin today, the water levels decreased at 21 stations, while increased at seven points and remained stable at two points at 9 am today, forecasting a further improvement of flood situation there.

Official data revealed the rivers were flowing below the danger mark at 23 points, while above danger level at six points this morning.

The continuous falling trend of water level was recoded at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points in the past 24 hours ending 9 am today, BWDB superintending engineer Mukhlesur Rahman.

Water levels of the Ganges River further decreased by two cm at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj, one cm at Rajshahi point, four cm each at Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points, while the water level in the Padma River remained stable at Goalunda point.

The Ganges River was flowing 175 cm, 175 cm, 97 cm and 77 cm below the danger level at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively, while the Padma River was flowing 80 cm above the danger mark at Gualundo point.

Besides, the water levels of the Korotoa and the Jamuna under the Brahmaputra Basin flowing through Bogura and Sirajganj districts were recorded a rising trend again this morning.

Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), said the water level of the Korotoa River increased by 24 cm at Chak Rahimpur point and nine cm at Bogura point.

The river was flowing two cm and 159 cm below the danger mark at the two stations respectively this morning, he added.

The Jamuna River water level went up by two cm at Kazipur point in Sirajganj and one cm at Sirajganj point, while decreased by one cm at Sariakandi point in Bogura.

The river was flowing 60 cm, 34 cm and 39 cm above the danger mark at Sariakandi, Kazipur and Sirajganj points respectively, reports BSS.
