Five people suffered burn injuries in a fire that broke out following a blast inside a septic tank in Mirpur area of Dhaka.
The injured were identified as land owner Yakub Ali, 70, his wife Hasin Ara Khanam, 60, their relative Yasmin Akter, 35, and Yasmin’s three-year-old daughter and caretaker Hasan, 32.
Pallabi Police Station chief Dadan Fakir said they were admitted to the burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The incident took place in the Pallabi neighbourhood of Mirpur around 11:30am.
“All of them are critically injured. But we are trying our best to treat them,” said Dr Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of burn unit.
In the morning, caretaker Mohammad Hasan opened the cover of the septic tank for clearing it.
Later, he dropped a flaming paper into the septic tank to check the presence of toxic gas and that has triggered the blast, according to the Mirpur Fire Service.
The neighbours rushed them to the hospital before arrival of the fire service men.
