Five people of a family have died of an unknown disease in 15 days between February 9 and 24 at Bhardardah Morichparha village under Baliadanghi upazila in Thakurgaon, spreading panic among locals.

Physicians say they have so far failed to determine the cause of the deaths.

A team led by Thakurgaon acting civil surgeon Shajahan Nawaz visited the village on Monday.

They called on the villagers not to be panicked about this.

The deceased were Abu Taher, 55, 35, wife Hosne Ara, 45, their sons Yousuf Ali and Mehdi Hasan, 27, and son-in-law Habibur Rahman, 35.

Taher died on February 9, followed by Habib, on February 20, Hosne, on February 21, and Yousuf and Mehedi on February 24.

All but Hosne developed fever, headache and sore throat, among many symptoms, like Taher. None of them survived more than a day after falling sick.

A villager, Joynal Abedin, 78, said he has never seen so many people of a family dying within such a short time.

Another villager, Hafez Ali, said they are panicked and some of them have started fleeing the village.

Local Union Parishad chairman Somor Chatterjee said he is working to ensure that the unknown disease does not spread, and people are not panicked about this.

Acting civil surgeon Shajahan Nawaz said they are yet to know the cause of the deaths but have already informed the higher authorities about this.

An expert team from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) will soon visit the village to assess the cause of the deaths, he said.

Then, within two days, Nawaz said, the cause of the deaths could be known.
