At least five patients infected with coronavirus were killed in a fire at corona unit of the United Hospital at Gulshan area in Dhaka on Wednesday night, a fire service official said.

“We have recovered five bodies,” Kamrul Islam, duty officer of fire service control room, said.

However, DMP’s Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Division Sudip Kumar said that there are casualties but they were not sure about the death toll.

The fire broke out at a tent built for the treatment of COVID-19 patients at the hospital around 9:55pm. Three firefighting units brought the fire under control at 10:25pm, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

Kamrul said they initially suspect an AC explosion caused the fire.

In February last year, a fire broke out at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College. The fire reportedly originated at a storeroom on the first floor of a new building of the hospital.
