FFs account for only 9.2pc quota in 10 BCS exams

The quota for freedom fighters (FFs) and female candidates could not be fulfilled in the last 10 BCS examinations.

"Only 9.2 per cent of the successors to the freedom fighters were appointed through the BCS exams," said public administration secretary Foyez Ahmed.

The applicants under female quota were below 9.0 per cent over the last 10 BCS exams, he mentioned, citing a study.

"It's true that talented candidates suffer in part for the quota system, but the fact is there is no country without quota system in public service."

Mr Ahmed said this on Thursday as the chief guest at an orientation of the assistant commissioners from the 36th BCS Admin Cadre.

The event was organised at the Circuit House here.

The secretary said the vacant FF and female quota in the cadre and non-cadre service have been fulfilled from among those outside the system.

Those who come out successfully from the quota system are no less brilliant than others, the bureaucrat argued.

"We don't follow any quota in the BCS preliminary and written tests as they are picked for running the administration with skills," he stated.

"We want them to be very honest and pro-people," Mr Ahmed said, asking the young officials to provide due services for the people.

They have much hopes, aspirations and expectations from the government officials, he added.

"We started our jobs with a basic pay of Tk 1,650 only, but the beginners are now starting with a monthly basic salary of Tk 22,000."

The prices of essentials have not gone up so much compared to the rise in the salaries of the government officials, Mr Ahmed remarked.

The government is providing up to Tk 7.5 million loan for each government employee at only 5.0 per cent interest rate.

Additional divisional commissioner (general) Shankar Ranjan Saha, local government divisional director Dipak Chakraborty and Anti-Corruption Commission's Munir Chowdhury also spoke.

Chattogram divisional commissioner Abdul Mannan chaired the programme.
